2010 Emission Changes -
Get Best Pricing and Choices Now!
In 2010, the EPA is requiring diesel engines to achieve a ne w diesel exhaust emissions regulations limit, which is significantly more stringent than the guidelines that went into effect in 2007. These guidelines apply to all types of vehicles including fire apparatus.
Next year you'll have two choices when you purchase a vehicle: a vehicle that reduces emissions in cylinder (advanced EGR) or a vehicle that reduces emissions by adding an additional fluid (urea) through an aftertreatment system (SCR). KME is pleased to let you know that we will offer both solutions to our customers on a wide variety of platforms including KME’s custom chassis and commercial chassis from several manufacturers.
However, these federal mandates will add significant expense to the overall cost of 2010 apparatus, industry wide, and will affect all aspects of the apparatus including cab configurations, compartmentation, wheelbases, plumbing, maintenance and service.

In addition as engine manufacturers prepare their manufacturing lines for the new 2010 models, 2009 models are becoming constrained. For example the Cummins ISM engine is being discontinued after 2009, but its replacement won’t be available until at least the third quarter of 2010. The Detroit Diesel Series 60 is being discontinued and of course, Caterpillar has already exited the fire market.
If you plan to purchase apparatus either in 2009 or 2010, it’s important that you understand now the impact of these changes so that you can adequately budget and plan for your fleets.
